Description

Icelandic black sand beaches are masterpieces of nature. They are mainly found on the south coast of the country, around 180 kilometers (112 miles) away from Reykjavík, and close to the small cillage of Vík. Reynisfjara Beach is the most famous one.

Black sand beaches are formed from volcanic ashes. Iceland is home to around 130 volcanos and, when they erupt, and the molten lava enters the sea cold water, it cools down so rapidly that it breaks into sand instantly.

Unlike many other black sand beaches in the world, the ones found on the South Coast of Iceland are almost always wet because they are in the rainiest part of Iceland. So, as the sand never becomes dry and gray, the dark colour becomes extremely noticeable.
